AOI/STP Strategic models
2:35 pm CEST

Choosing the right model and strategy is crucial for the success of all innovation ecosystems, areas of innovation and science parks. This session presents the fundamental building blocks and strategies based on the IASP Strategigram’s seven axes, and addresses emerging missions and roles of STPs, and how AOIs differ from the classic science park model.
Speaker: Ebba Lund, CEO, IASP
Business incubation, business creation
4:15 pm CEST

Encouraging the creation and growth of new businesses is a key factor for economic development, and business incubation is a major pillar of most innovation ecosystems. Understanding the fundamentals of incubation, the synergies between parks and incubators, and the different ways in which this interaction can happen is essential to design cost-effective facilities and to determine how to make business incubation succeed in STPs/AOIs. This session will explore both the fundamentals and the latest trends in successful business incubation.

AOI/STP Services
2:05 pm CEST

High value-added services are the trademark of science parks and areas of innovation. Managers must ensure not only that the services provided are quality services, but also that they meet the current needs and anticipate the future needs of their resident companies.
This session will consider the specific programmes and services STPs and AOIs should offer in their local context at different stages of company development, considering the different needs of startups, SMEs and corporates, and will explore the various mechanism which can be used to support innovative companies whatever their size.
Speaker: Carol Stewart, Associate VP, Tech Parks Arizona (USA)
Marketing & Communication
3:45 pm CEST

As well as nurturing startups and new businesses, STPs and AOIs must attract established companies and institutions. A sound marketing and communication strategy is crucial to this end: parks need to attract businesses from their own region, nationally and internationally, and they must also be attractive to people and talent. The message of their role and importance must reach not only stakeholders, potential clients and decision-makers, but also the wider community. This multiplicity of targets and purposes requires a well-orchestrated communication and marketing strategy.
Speaker: Salvatore Majorana, Director, Kilometro Rosso (Italy)

AOI/STP Governance
2:05 pm CEST

An adequate governance scheme is crucial for the success of STPs and AOIs, especially at the early stages of a project. It must determine the right mix of people and institutions that will have decision making capacity, its objectives, mission, strategic models, but also its actual design (site, infrastructure, etc.) through the different stages of its development.
All these aspects make up the institutional architecture of the park which change as it develops, and STP/AOI managers should take them into account from the very beginning of the project.
Speaker: Lena Miranda, CEO, Linköping Science Park (Sweden)
AOI/STP Manager Nightmares
3:45 pm CEST

The problems and challenges that STP/AOI managers will encounter throughout their careers, and the skills that they need to face them, are much more diverse than one seminar could ever cover: these challenges are found all across the board of STP managers’ daily tasks.
In this session, we give an experienced manager a free hand to address the ‘ten biggest problems in the life of an STP manager’. Covering the lessons learned from a long career in STP/AOI management, it will be particularly valuable for newcomers to the industry!
